One (1) Used Salem 6 x 48 Bottom Arbor Reverse Rotation Combination Edger. General:
The edger is of bottom arbor design, with climb-cut arbor and saw rotation. The edger has combination shifting saw and gang saw arrangement. There are two press roll units in front of the
saws, and two press roll units behind the saws.
Framework:
The edger frame has 1-1/2 side plates, with a 12 channel base. The gate has a pantograph support for easy access to the saws.
Knurled Feedrolls:
There are four infeed rolls and four outfeed rolls. The
feedrolls feature a pecially designed 90-degree knurl to
eliminate lead errors. The rolls are 5-15/16-diameter at the knurled surface, with the ends turned to 2-15/16 at the bearings. The knurled surfaces in industrial hard chrome
plated. The feedrolls are driven by a roller chain drive in a serpentine arrangement with an air tightener.
Press Roll Units:
There are two press roll units ahead of the saws, and two press roll units behind the saws. The press rolls are raised and lowered by Salem 8 trunnion head air cylinders. Each press roll
assembly has two safety rods with rubber bumpers. The valves are Bellows Valvair.
Splined Arbor Assembly:
The No. 3 splined arbor is 5-15/16-diameter, with 3-7/16 ends at the bearings. The arbor is made from 4150 alloy steel. The splined surface is hardened to approximately 58 Rockwell C. The gate end of the arbor has a nose cone and puller bolt assembly
for easy gate opening. The arbor bearings and housings are
built for oil bath lubrication.
Saw Arrangement:
A babbitt guide system is provided for a bank of 12-saws set at
2 (nominal). Babbitt guide pads fit to the guide arms by a
dovetail arrangement for accuracy and easy maintenance. Guide
arms and spacers are made from T-1, and they are surface ground
for precision sizing and alignment. The guide system is drilled
for guide pad lubrication. Each guide pad has lubricant
outlets. Babbitt guides and shifter brackets are for four (4)
saws. There is one (1) stationary saw and three (3) shifting
saws.
Clamshell Opening:
The clamshell opening opens the upper front portion of the frame
to expose the saws and guides. The opening action is powered by
two heavy-duty air cylinders. There is a safety bar to hold the
frame in the open position.
Feedroll Hydrostatic Drive Unit:
With Sunstrand transmission pump (20 GPM), Sunstrand electrical
displacement control, 20 HP Lincoln electric motor, and a 70-
gallon tank.
Sol Tank Corp:
Soluble oil and water saw lube system, with a 60-gallon tank.
Direct Logic 305 PLC:
With schematics and ladder listings, Direct Logic hand held
programmer, Digitron RPC enclosure with four (4) saw cards.
Laser:
With edger control console, Digitron four (4) saw setworks
controls, nine (9) Laharco lasers (6 fixed and 3 shiftable).
Infeed Timber Deck:
21 x 6-6, with a 3 HP Westinghouse electric motor (1730 FPM),
and a Westinghouse gearbox (58.3:1).
Infeed Rollcase:
With five (5) rolls, 4 x 9 (4 fixed and one swing out), 2-sets
of 2-pin stops, 2 HP Toshiba motor and SKK gearbox.
Edger Setworks Coffin:
With three (3) Hannah cylinders, three (2) Atchley control servo
valves, three (3) Temposonic probes and wiring box, Alemite oil
mist bearing oiler with low pressure alarm, Alemite air and
valve oiler, valves, switches and plumbing for clamshell and
battery lock.
Jackshaft and Flywheel:
3-7/16 shaft with air flex 225 DP100 caliper brake.
Even Ending Fence.
Spare Parts:
One (1) 54 knurled bedroll, One (1) used arbor and cone, one
(1) Temposonic probe, two (2) saw cards for Digitron setworks,
one (1) Atchley control servo valve, eight (8) sets of two
shifting guides, thirty-seven (37) 1-13/16 battery guides,
twenty (20) 7/8 battery guides, ten (10) 2-3/16 battery guides,
five (5) guide jigs, and seven (7) sets of battery guide spacers.
Edger was recently in service and appears in excellent
condition.

One (1) Used Schurman Model 6TA48, 6x48 Combination Edger.
Edger was reconditioned and updated by Schurman/USNR in 1986.
Edger rolls are completely split on both top and bottom with separate drives. Seven (7) bedrolls are knurled and chromed. Two (2) powered press rolls (per side) have replaceable Coleman teeth and are also chromed. Three (3) saw hydraulic linear positioner setworks box on top of edger was added in 1986, and includes laser light brackets no controls. Arbor is splined replaceable sleeve. Gang side is on right with nominal 2 babbitt guides. Shifters are on left with horseshoe-style guides. Includes 20-long infeed table built new in 1986, also split, with cross chains, flippers, and shifting pin stops. 20 outfeed table for board side only has shifting picker. Edger appears in very good condition. See photos on our web site. Inventory No. 8111. Board bay is 27 and gang is 25-wide. Board side feeds at 400 FPM, gang at 200 FPM.

Current feed speed is 180 feet per minute. There is currently no linear positioner attached to the guide bar, as was originally equipped, but it could be easily restored, and is specified in the drawings for this edger. Infeed Module 4 x 36 capacity, with two (2) powered knurled and chromed press rolls, two (2) knurled and chromed powered bedrolls, driven by 7-1/2 HP SM cyclo-drive, laser box, and over thickness bar. Chipping Module One (1) CM&E Model 34, 8-knife, bent knife chipping head mounted on right side with sliding base, 150 HP Toshiba TEFC motor, temposonics controlled hydraulic linear positioner cylinder, automatic bedway lubricator, shroud, v-belt drive, guards, and chromed bedplates. Chipping head on left side is same as right, but is stationary. Saw Module Schurman Model 4TA24 saw box, with shifting saw arbor driven by 100 HP Toshiba TEFC motor, with two (2) chromed smooth non-powered press rolls, three (3) knurled and chromed powered bedrolls, 25 HP SM cyclo-drive, and temposonics controlled hydraulic linear positioner cylinder to control location of splitter saw. Saw Cab 6 x 7 Sonic Barrier operators cab. Control console only. Setworks Pump unit included, but no controls. New controls by Digitron available at additional cost.
